An awareness story - Zach

I hope all of you will read Christina's story. She is the mom in the ambassador family for this year's March for Babies of Utah County (March of Dimes) walk, and has a wonderful story of trial, hope and whole lotta of love :)

My pregnancy started out perfectly. Everything was normal and progressing wonderfully.  This was our first child, and we were excited to be having a little boy!  While at work one July morning, I suddenly had a huge cramp.  I wasn’t having regular cramps, but it hurt to move or walk.  Scared and in tears, I called my doctor’s office and then waited for a reply.  I was 23 weeks and 6 days along.

The doctor advised me to put my feet up and wait for it to go away.  My boss drove me home and I spent the next hour talking with my mom on the phone.  During our conversation, the cramps kept getting stronger and closer together.  I called my doctor’s office again and was directed to go to the hospital immediately.

The first check at the hospital revealed that I was dilated 8cm with a bulging bag.  Suddenly a crazy mob of activity began all around me—IVs, shots, fluids, medications, people.  They were able to stall my delivery for about 12 hours, until the monitors were no longer picking up his heartbeat.  Suddenly it was pure chaos again.  Two pushes later, Zachary Joseph was born.

He weighed 1lb 9oz and was 12 inches long. There he was.  It was surreal.  It was nothing like what you see on the baby shows on TV.  He didn’t make any noise—he didn’t even move.  The doctor held Zach up for me to see, and then he was gone.

It was intimidating to go into the NICU for the first time and see Zach attached to all sorts of tubes and wires; but, underneath all that I could see a beautiful little boy.  It was amazing.  I talked to him and he held onto my finger.  At that instant I knew that nothing in the world mattered except for helping Zach get big and strong.
Zach spent 133 days in the NICU.  Those days were full of challenges.  He survived a staph infection, pneumonia (three times!), level II hemorrhage in his brain, perforated intestine, septic shock, and heart surgery.  He was transferred to Primary Children’s Medical Center for part of this time, and it was very difficult to be so far away from my baby boy.  Zach pulled out his breathing tube four times.  Weaning him off of the ventilator was a slow and frustrating process.  Fortunately, he was a champion eater.  He was a better eater than any 23 weeker the nurses had ever seen!

And then, finally, it was time to bring him home!  It was such a rewarding feeling to know he survived!  After months of coming home alone, he came with us.  He’s been a joy and a blessing ever since.

Baby cage

There are some moments on a hard day that I feel somewhat of a desire to place my child in a little cage and keep him there till he stops whining.  I would never actually do that though.

Now,  how comfortable would you be with putting your child out on one of these?

A description from Life:

“A nanny supervising a baby suspended in a wire cage attached to the outside of a high tenement block window. The cages were distributed to members of the Chelsea Baby Club in London who have no gardens, or qualms about putting a child in a box dangling over a busy street.” [June 23, 1937]
Wow, I just don't know about that my friends.

Audio stories for your little ones

Listening to audiobooks before bedtime was something that I loved to do as a child. Though not a replacement for traditional reading, it’s a great supplemental tool for building listening skills and their little attention span:)

I recently discovered Kiddie Records Weekly, which offers free audio streaming of classic children’s records from the 1940s and 1950s. Since my little one is still too little, I haven't been able to try it out yet, but I think it is an awesome idea. Go check it out and let me know how it is!

Moms with style - Miranda

Meet Miranda. Cute, brilliant, amazingly talented and our very first moms with style feature. I love her mode. It's cute mixed with comfy, and with a burst of personality. What this mom can create is unbelievable. You see, what introduced me to Miranda was her fun little project. It's called Project Repurpose. She turns the old  things in her closet (or someone elses) to new again. You will never believe her transformations. See it all for yourself here.

[Left] Olive Knot Sweater: Anthropologie, Striped Tank: H&M,  Skinny Jeans: Mary Jane,  Boots: Born  [Right] Floral Sweater: Lia Molly,  Pompom scarf handmade by Miranda, Ruffled Dress and grey leggings: H&M, Knee high boots: Ugg Australia
[Left] Nautical Stripe Sweater: Banana Republic, Grey Tank: Gap Maternity, Cut Off Jeans: True Religion, White All Stars (not pictured): Converse [Right] Target and Repurposed by Miranda

And how about that cute little bump of hers? Makes me [almost] want to be prego again :)

Happy Friday my friends!

DIY - Carseat Canopy

I loved having a car seat canopy when my little guy was a baby. It kept out light, germs, and strangers. So nice! I've even seen some people double it up as a hooter hider. Looking for cute fabric? I shop for mine here and here

I found this easy tutorial on Christy's cute little site. Check out her baby skirt tutorial too!
